Planning a wine tasting trip? Southwest Michigan’s wine country near Baroda and Buchanan is home to several beautiful vineyards including Dablon Vineyards, Gravity Winery, and Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant.
Southwest Michigan is home to more than 20 wineries and vineyards, ranging from
small boutique producers to expansive estate properties featuring farm-to-table cuisine
designed to highlight their vintages. Whether you're looking to spend an afternoon
cozied up at the tasting bar or searching for a picturesque setting to share a bottle of the
region’s best wine, these are my top three estate wineries in Southwest Michigan to visit
on your next trip.
#3 Gravity Winery – Baroda, Michigan
Michigan spans 30 scenic acres. The modern tasting room overlooks a private lake,
offering one of the most peaceful and photo-worthy settings in Southwest Michigan wine
country.
Start your visit at the tasting counter, where you can sample a variety of reds, whites,
sparkling wines, and ciders. During the warmer months, the covered deck is the perfect
place to relax and take in the vineyard views.
On a summer afternoon, I’m partial to their Merlot Rosé — fragrant, light, and made for
sharing with friends on the patio. In late spring and early summer, you may even catch a
glimpse of the resident swans guiding their hatchlings across the lake.
If you’re in the mood for something bolder, try Equation, a well-balanced Bordeaux-style
red blend. Prefer something lighter with less oak? Their Pinot Noir is a great choice.
#2 Tabor Hill – Buchanan, Michigan
something for everyone. While their wines are excellent, their on-site restaurant makes
this estate winery a full culinary experience.
I recommend grabbing a table on the deck overlooking the vineyard. Their chef-driven
menu features locally sourced ingredients crafted into thoughtful, seasonal dishes
designed to showcase their wines. While they keep a few guest favorites year-round,
the menu rotates to capture Midwestern harvests at their peak.
Tabor Hill is well known for its Albariño — a semi-dry, lively white with bright citrus notes
that pairs beautifully with seafood and chicken dishes. Their Dry Gewürztraminer has
also earned double gold medals and remains a favorite among both staff and visitors.
If you’re looking for a Southwest Michigan winery that combines elevated dining with
estate-grown wines, Tabor Hill should absolutely be on your list.
#1 Dablon Vineyards – Baroda, Michigan
of the best estate wineries in Southwest Michigan.
Recently named #8 Best Wine Tasting Room in the country by USA Today’s 10Best
Readers’ Choice Awards, Dablon was also recognized as Midwest Living’s Best Winery
in the Midwest in 2023.
This sprawling vineyard overlooks glacier-formed hills and has become a must-visit
destination for wine enthusiasts across the Midwest. Dablon grows approximately 17
grape varietals and produces more than 30 distinct wines annually. Several feature rarer
varietals not commonly found in the region, including standouts like Carmenere and
Malbec.
Beyond the wine itself, the experience sets Dablon apart. The staff is exceptionally
friendly and knowledgeable about the property, the grape varietals, and the winemaking
process.
In the winter months, grab a bottle of Cabernet and warm up next to the stone fireplace.
You can also reserve one of their popular outdoor igloos for a more intimate cold-
weather experience. During summer, the patio overlooking endless rows of grapevines
is bustling with energy, and weekend entertainment makes it an ideal gathering spot.
Dablon consistently delivers one of the best wine tasting experiences in Southwest
Michigan.
