Milwaukee is one of those cities that surprises you in the best way. With historic architecture, a vibrant food and drink scene, and that unmistakable Midwestern warmth, it’s the perfect destination for a quick weekend getaway.
We’re lucky to have friends who made the move from Chicago to Milwaukee a few years ago, which gives us the perfect excuse to visit often. Not only do we get quality time together, but we also get the bonus of built-in local tour guides—always a win.
On our most recent trip, the weekend included over-the-top Bloody Marys, wandering one of the best public markets in the Midwest, cocktails at a historic lounge, and a standout tapas-style dinner. Staying in the historic downtown district made everything easy to explore while soaking up the city’s charm.
If you’re planning a quick escape, here’s exactly how to spend a weekend in Milwaukee.
Where to Stay in Downtown Milwaukee
Downtown Milwaukee’s historic district is the ideal home base. Think beautiful architecture, walkable streets, plenty of parking, and easy access to restaurants, nightlife, and Lake Michigan.
Many visitors choose to stay near the Historic Third Ward or the riverwalk area for convenience—and you really can’t go wrong with either.
We stayed at
Homewood Suites by Hilton Milwaukee Downtown, a thoughtfully restored historic building filled with character. Original architectural details like exposed brick, wood floors, oversized vintage doors, and curated display cases from the renovation give it a unique charm you won’t find in a standard hotel. It also includes a free breakfast, which is great when we bring along our daughter.
Even better? It’s just steps from the Milwaukee Public Market—a must-visit for any food lover.
Start Your Weekend: Bloody Marys & Brunch
No trip to Milwaukee is complete without a Bloody Mary. Wisconsin takes this cocktail seriously—in the best possible way.
Expect drinks piled high with garnishes like pickled vegetables, cheese, meats, and often a mini beer chaser on the side.
We kicked things off at
St. Paul Fish Company, and let me tell you—this wasn’t your average brunch cocktail. My Bloody Mary came topped with a lobster tail and smoked salmon (“salmon crack,” as they call it). Safe to say, the weekend started strong.
The food lived up to the hype:
Fresh West Coast oysters with classic accompaniments
A buttery, indulgent lobster roll
A perfectly fried walleye sandwich
We will absolutely be back.
Exploring the Milwaukee Public Market
This place is a dream for food lovers—packed with vendors offering artisan cheeses, baked goods, spices, fresh seafood, and specialty items. It’s lively, welcoming, and incredibly easy to lose track of time in the best way. We spent so much time enjoying the market that I will be posting a follow up blog with more details.
And this one? Possibly my favorite ever.
I ordered the “Breakfast Bloody,” made with bacon-infused vodka and topped with:
hard boiled egg
Nueske’s bacon
beef stick
mozzarella whips (obsessed)
pickle, olive, and celery
The house-made tomato juice base was perfection. Oh—and it came with a sidecar of local lager. Because… Wisconsin.
Dinner in Walker's Point: A Must-Visit Restaurant
Milwaukee’s dining scene continues to impress, blending classic comfort food with innovative, chef-driven menus.
We headed to
The Odd Duck in the Walker's Point neighborhood—named one of USA Today’s 2024 Restaurants of the Year.
The menu is built around seasonal, shareable plates using locally sourced ingredients, and everything we tried delivered.
Highlights included:
The cocktail menu deserves its own mention—creative, balanced, and beautifully executed.
My favorite was a delicate purple drink with hibiscus and currant-infused gin.
It’s the kind of place where you want to order everything—and if you go with friends, you just might.
After-Dinner Drinks at a Milwaukee Classic
Open since 1938, this spot is pure vintage charm—dark wood, moody lighting, and an old-school atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time.
Here’s the twist: there’s no menu.
Instead, you tell your server what you like, and they craft something just for you. It’s a fun, personalized experience that makes every visit different.
I went classic with a dirty vodka martini, then ended the night with a boozy cherry-almond milkshake topped with whipped cream. Over-the-top? Yes. Worth it? Also yes.
Ending the Weekend (with a Different Kind of Irish Goodbye)
The next afternoon, we wrapped up the trip with a visit to our friends’ home before heading back to Chicago.
They treated us to a homemade traditional Irish meal—corned beef, cabbage, red potatoes, rye bread, and horseradish. After a weekend full of indulgence, it was the perfect hearty sendoff.
And yes, while I’m known for a classic “Irish goodbye,” this one involved hugs, full plates, to-go containers, and a promise to return soon.
